Barnard College: I Am Queen Mary

Barnard College: I Am Queen Mary

We’re very excited about the arrival of
I Am Queen Mary, this new sculpture that’s going to sit in the lobby of
Barnard Hall. It it makes me think about all of the new dialogues and the new conversations that having the sculpture here will generate. I Am queen Mary
stands for the people who survived and fought against Danish colonialism in the Caribbean, today known as the U.S. Virgin Islands. I want people to think about first the colonial structures that still impact us today. I want us to think about all the strong female leaders that have led many resistance movements across the world. The Ford Foundation Gallery commissioned this powerful sculpture as part of our Radical Love exhibition. The gallery highlights artists and artwork who point the way to a more just future and it’s particularly special for me to have this work here as a Barnard alumna class of 1996. She’s saying, ‘ I am human and whatever I put my mind to I can be become and do.’ It’s a proud moment. This project started off as an idea of two women collaborating together and I’m hoping that the students can take away that they too can have these ideas that can start off as inspirations and lead to tremendous impact in the world.
