Classroom Experience – Research College of Nursing

I’m Rebecca Saxton and I’m an associate
professor here at Research College of Nursing. The classroom experience here at
Research College of Nursing is an exciting one
our faculty are committed to being expert educators. The classroom is alive
and exciting we have a traditional baccalaureate degree program and an
accelerated option program. In both programs you will find students from all ages from traditional eighteen-year-old students coming from high school to second degree students or moms or those who have retired from one career and coming back for another I think we have some of the best students, definitely in the Kansas City area if not in the country. [Hermine] I wanted to be a student at
Research College of Nursing because I hear a lot of good things about the
nurses that come out of this program. The peers in my program are very positive. We all have positive energy. I feel like my class is a family because we all
help each other. We all have this same goal. Research is preparing me to be a leader
in the nursing industry by providing me
with a variety of clinical experiences and just experiences all together. [Alex] The
way that Research emphasizes leadership and service is something that I’ve recognized
as being unique in the Kansas City area. It’s taught in the classroom to
have a service mindset in the community but also we have required social justice
projects every semester. [Dr. Saxton] What students can expect from faculty members here is evidence-based teaching, learning strategies We have very enthusiastic
faculty whose mission is to be excellent educators. [Instrumental Music] [Alex] Nursing school is a lot
and you can’t get around that, but when you have faculty that’s willing to help and willing to listen and willing to kind of meet you where you’re at it’s very helpful [Dr. Saxton] So what is different about Research College of Nursing than other schools of nursing? Here in Kansas City we are the first to have a
Dedicated Education Unit. A Dedicated Education Unit is an innovative model of clinical
instruction where faculty and clinicians in the hospital take responsibility for
teaching nursing students in the clinical setting [Tobey] The Seelos Simulation Center
gives students a realistic environment on our simulator patients students are
able to start an IV they’re able to insert a catheter they’re able to draw blood,
give medications just like they would to a normal patient So they’re able to come in
and take care of a patient but not have so many risks and not have so much anxiety [Hermine] Advice I would give students who aren’t sure if Research
College of Nursing is for them is to just come visit our faculty members and just have
a conversation with them and that right there just might have you
hooked. [Dr. Saxton] When students are looking for a nursing program they should look for a program
that’s committed to educating students to provide safe, quality care and that’s what we do here at Research College of Nursing [instrumental music]
