I got the scholarship for £5,000 so I kind of called her at that moment, right away, I just called her and I was like “did you check your email?” and she was like “no, why?”. I said “because I got the scholarship” and then I hung up the phone and I ran to my parents and I was like “I got the scholarship!” I don’t check my emails that regularly, she’s the one who’s always telling me “did you check your email?” I’m like “…no I didn’t” so that day she called me, she was so excited she was like “did you check the email?” I was like “no what happened?” She was like “I got the scholarship, check, you must have gotten it too” I was like “it’s not necessary that because you got it, I got it too” she was like “no, we’ve done everything together, you must have got it too. Then she just hung up the phone. After hearing this news the first thing I did is call my mother I told her “hey mum, you are going to miss me” Because I’m going to the UK for an entire year and then I told my father, my friends and my entire family. It was a really, really amazing feeling I slept very late that day and the first one I called was my young brother I told him that I had been provisionally selected for a Commonwealth Scholarship so I’ll go to the UK. He became very happy and then the next morning, I went to see my parents and tell them about it. They became very happy. They prayed and wished me luck for the next steps. I came here because this is a really valuable degree for me because I’m from Pakistan and a degree from the UK really means a lot so if I’m going back and continuing my career over there, this degree will be really valuable for me The £5,000 actually means we can live a few months not asking for money from back home We’re able to manage a bit. That’s the only reason I’ll look for more scholarships There’s another one. Too bad we can’t get this one again, it’s only once for the entire programme but I’m going to try and look for other scholarships and see if I can get them because it’s a huge help Scottish people are nice and friendly I remember the first day, the fellow who was supposed to receive me was not around at the moment, so the taxi driver dropped me off and knocked on the door, but the fellow wasn’t there then someone came and said “hello, are you okay?” I said “I’m okay, I’m just waiting for a man” “he’s supposed to be here any moment” They said “no problem, you can pop in and wait for him” I said thanks and they welcomed me and they gave me food and drink so I started to love the people of Dundee and Scotland from the first day I came From my background because I came from a third country and a country that’s under occupation When I came here, I really tasted how it felt to be free to not being worried about any checkpoints You can do anything you want as long as it doesn’t harm others. So all my days here are outstanding.
